Germany is highly popular among international students. This is mainly because of the country's many excellent universities, its dynamic student life and good funding options. On a global comparison the Federal Republic ranks fourth on the list of the most popular countries among international students. According to the latest official statistics, there are over 357,000 foreign students seeking a university degree in Germany whereas the number is steadily increasing. With more than 409 higher education institutions across the country, Germany provides each student with the possibility to choose more than 14,500 Bachelor and Master degree programmes.

Are there english-taught degree courses in Germany?

Yes, there are numerous International Degree Courses taught in English for international students who do not have sufficient knowledge of the German language to enroll in a course entirely in German.

Do I need to pass TOEFL or IELTS for an english-taught course?

Yes, you will need TOEFL or IELTS in order to apply for a programme that is entirely in English at a German university. Additionally, if you are applying for a postgraduate degree programme and already have an undergraduate degree in an English-taught course, then you will not need TOEFL or IELTS.

Do I need a student visa to study in Germany?

If you are not a member of EU/EEA countries, then you will need to apply for a student visa in order to enter Germany and pursue your degree. For studies lasting more than 3 months, you will need a national visa. Make sure to apply as early as possible so you avoid any potential processing delays.

Can I stay in Germany when I complete my studies?

Yes. After completing your studies in Germany as an international student, you’re able to apply for a residence permit to stay in the country and seek work for an additional period of 18 months. If you gain work in Germany within this time you should make sure that you extend your visa, residence or work permit to ensure you are living in the country legally.

If my study programme will be taught entirely in English, is it still necessary for me – in order to be issued a visa – to produce proof of sufficient German language skills?

No, if the exclusive language of instruction will be English you don’t need to know the German language; however, a little knowledge of German will take you a long way in your everyday life as a student.
